What your electrician needs to know when you request an electrical quote
Obtaining quotes from tradespeople is part and parcel of any home renovation. When you require electrical work, your electrician will need to know some key information about both the job and your home – so to get an accurate quote as quickly as possible, and keep the whole process simple for yourself and the electrician, having the following details to hand is essential.
Do you know what kind of lights you’d like to install? If you have a particular type or brand in mind, let the electrician know. If not, explain your needs and ask for suggestions.
Is your house single or double storey?
Is there roof access?
Are your walls brick veneer or double brick? How high are your ceilings? This information will help the electrician assess how difficult the wiring will be to access, and how long it might take to complete the job, which will impact the quote.
Also, when was your home built? This is probably one of the most important details, as it will help the electrician determine the quality of the existing wiring and any age-related issues, such as whether there is likely to be asbestos present.
Remember, as you sit at the kitchen table making the call, there’s a chance the electrician is on the road between jobs or crawling through another customer’s roof space, so jotting down a few notes may not be possible. A great tip is when you finish the phone call, send a quick text through to the electrician with your contact details (name, phone number, email and address of the site), along with the days that best suit you to have the job completed. This will help the electrician get back to you ASAP, so you can get started with your project.
